20 copy-and-paste review request templates for Google: text messages, emails, chat, signs and one follow-up, by industry, and compliant with Google's rules.

Published

You know you should ask for reviews. The hard part is knowing what to say without sounding needy or pushy. Below are 20 short messages, sorted by channel and situation, ready to copy and adapt. They all follow the same rule: one message for every customer, no rewards, no star rating requested.

How do you use these templates?

Swap in the variables, send the same day or the next, and follow up once. That's it.

  • Same message to every customer, happy or not: no pre-screening.
  • No incentives: no discounts, gift cards or prize drawings.
  • No requested rating or wording ('5 stars', 'mention Maria').
  • The direct review-form link, tested on a phone.
  • One follow-up at most, three to seven days later.
  • An easy way to opt out of future messages.

Text message tip: watch the 160-character limit

A single text holds 160 characters, link included. Go over and it's split into several segments. Emojis and curly quotes (’ “ ”) switch the text to a different encoding that holds only 70 characters per message, so the templates below use straight quotes and no emojis. The link counts too: the full review-form link (https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=…) is about 80 characters, which is why each text template keeps its wording under 80.

What wording should you avoid?

Anything that offers a reward, screens customers or scripts what they write. Google's prohibited content policy bans all three.

The full rules, including the FTC's review rule, are in our guide on how to get more Google reviews.

What rules apply to review request texts and emails?

This isn't legal advice, but here's the short version. Under CAN-SPAM, the FTC looks at an email's primary purpose: a message that only relates to a transaction the customer just made is treated differently from a commercial one, but promotional content can make the whole email commercial, with opt-out requirements. For texts, FCC rules ban autodialed texts to cell phones without prior consent, and commercial texts require written consent. So ask permission when you collect a customer's number, keep requests free of promotions, and include an opt-out. If you send at scale, check with counsel.

After the request: reply and show the reviews

Every review deserves a reply. Use our guide on how to respond to negative reviews for the hard ones. On the Pro plan, Revys AI review replies draft responses for you to approve before they post.

FAQ

How do you ask for a review by text?

Send a short text the same day or the next: the customer's first name, your business name, a quick thank-you and the direct link to your review form. Keep the whole message, link included, under 160 characters so it goes out as one text.

What is a good message to request feedback?

Short, personal and specific: thank the customer by name, mention what you did for them, explain that a review helps a small business, and include the direct link. Ask for an honest review, not a star rating.

How do you politely ask a client for a Google review?

Ask in person first, at the moment they see the result, then follow up in writing with the link. For example: 'Thanks for trusting us with your kitchen remodel, Alex. If you have two minutes, a Google review would mean a lot: [link]'.

How many times should you follow up on a review request?

Once, three to seven days after the first request, and only if they haven't left a review. More than that feels pushy and can trigger opt-outs or annoyed reviews.

Can I offer a gift card for a Google review?

No. The FTC rule allows some incentives that don't depend on sentiment, but Google's policy bans any incentive, including payment, discounts and free goods or services, in exchange for a review.

Do review request texts need consent?

Often, yes. FCC rules ban autodialed texts to cell phones without prior consent, and commercial texts require written consent. Collect permission when you take the customer's number, include a way to opt out, and check with counsel if you send at scale.
