Salon reviews are personal. They're about how someone looks, about a specific stylist, sometimes about a big day like a wedding. Your reply has to stay warm without exposing the client, and firm without exposing your team. Here are the rules specific to salons, then 16 templates (8 positive, 8 negative) with placeholders in brackets.

For the general method, see how to respond to Google reviews and how to respond to negative reviews. For other industries, see our positive review response examples.

What's different about replying to salon reviews?

Three things: the named stylist, a subjective result, and the temptation to game reviews.

The named stylist. Lots of reviews name someone. That's great for positive reviews (pass it on, thank them by name) and risky for negative ones: don't repeat the name of the stylist being criticized, and don't defend or discipline them in public. The salon replies; the team conversation happens behind the scenes.

The result is subjective. A "botched" cut for one client is "exactly what I asked for" to the stylist. Don't argue the result. Offer to look at it together and fix it. That's the reply future clients want to see.

Staff reviews and review quotas. Google's policy counts reviews based on a conflict of interest, including current or past employment, as fake engagement, so your stylists don't review the salon. It also bans asking staff to solicit a set number of reviews or reviews with specific content. Encouraging clients to leave honest feedback is fine; a "most reviews this month wins" contest isn't.

Negative review responses for salons

Same structure every time: thanks, the issue named, an apology, a concrete offer, a direct contact, and a signature from the owner or manager. No arguing about the result.

9. Bad haircut or too short

Hi [Name], thanks for telling us, and we're sorry your cut isn't what you hoped for. We'd love to see you again to look at it together and see what we can adjust. Call me at [phone] and I'll find you a slot quickly. [Name], salon manager

10. Color went wrong

Hi [Name], we're sorry the color isn't what you were hoping for. Color can be corrected, and we want to do that with you. Please call me directly at [phone] so we can book a correction and talk it through first. [Name], salon manager

Offline, before you correct anything, review what was agreed (reference photo, color card). In public, none of that.

11. Running late

Hi [Name], waiting [30 minutes] past your appointment time isn't OK, and we apologize. We've [blocked more time for color services in the schedule] so it doesn't happen again. Feel free to call me at [phone] for your next booking. [Name], salon manager

12. More expensive than expected

Hi [Name], thanks for the feedback. A total that surprises you at checkout isn't a good feeling. Our pricing depends on [hair length and technique], and we should have quoted you before we started. We now do that for every service. I'm happy to talk at [phone]. [Name], salon manager

13. A named stylist criticized

Hi [Name], thank you for sharing your experience. We take this seriously and have discussed it internally. I'd rather talk with you directly: could you call me at [phone]? [Name], salon manager

Don't repeat the stylist's name. If the review insults or harasses them, report it for harassment.

14. Online booking not honored

Hi [Name], your online booking wasn't honored, and we're sorry: that shouldn't happen. [Our online calendar didn't sync / We didn't let you know in time]. We've [added a text confirmation the day before]. Call me at [phone] and I'll get you in first. [Name], salon manager

15. Cleanliness

Hi [Name], thanks for pointing this out. A clean salon and clean tools aren't negotiable, and we took your comment seriously: we've [tightened our cleaning routine between clients]. I'd welcome a call at [phone]. [Name], salon manager

16. Skin reaction or allergy

Hi [Name], we're very sorry to hear this and hope you're feeling better. We want to understand what happened: could you contact me directly at [phone]? [Name], salon manager

No diagnosis, no product names, no "you didn't tell us about an allergy" in public. It's a health matter: handle it privately, and if there may be a claim, call your insurer.

What mistakes should salons avoid in review replies?

  • Commenting on the client's looks, hair type or photo.
  • Repeating the name of a stylist who's being criticized.
  • Saying in public that the result is what the client asked for.
  • Posting the appointment time, the bill or the exact service if the client didn't mention it.
  • Having staff review the salon, or setting review quotas per stylist.
  • Copying the same reply under every five-star review.
  • Offering a free service in exchange for removing a review.

It's worth the effort: in BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 80% of consumers said they're more likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews, and half said generic, templated responses put them off. So vary the wording.

How do you keep up when the salon gets lots of reviews?

Start from the templates and add one detail from each review. To try it, paste a review into the free AI review response generator. To automate, Revys AI review replies (Pro plan) drafts replies in your salon's tone (warm, casual, professional…) with your signature: auto-publish positive reviews after a delay, approve negative ones manually. Sensitive-topic detection is tuned for French-language reviews for now, so keep 1 to 3 star English reviews on manual approval.

To get more reviews, put your Google review QR code at the front desk, or text clients after their appointment with our review request templates. For the rest (getting reviews, your profile, showing reviews on your site), see our page on Google reviews for salons and spas. Other trades: templates for auto repair shops and real estate agents.

FAQ

How do you respond to a positive salon review?

Thank the client by first name, mention the service they loved (the cut, the color, the advice) and pass the compliment to the stylist they named. Then invite them back for their next appointment.

How should a salon respond to a review about a bad hair color?

Apologize for the disappointment without debating the result in public, and offer an appointment to look at the color together and correct it. Give a direct number and sign as the salon owner or manager.

How do you respond when a review criticizes a specific stylist?

Reply on behalf of the salon, don't repeat the stylist's name, and neither defend nor throw them under the bus in public. Say you take it seriously and offer to talk directly. If the review harasses the person, report it to Google.

Can stylists ask clients for reviews?

Yes, they can encourage clients to share honest feedback. But Google's policy bans asking staff to solicit a set number of reviews or reviews with specific content, and reviews from employees are a conflict of interest.

Should a salon offer a free service in response to a bad review?

A free fix for a real mistake is fine, offered privately. It must never depend on the client editing or removing the review: Google bans incentives tied to reviews, and the FTC's 2024 rule bans review suppression.

What is an example of a good response to a positive review for a hairstylist?

"Thanks so much, Priya! Dana loved reading this. Six weeks is the sweet spot for that bob, so we'll see you in December." It thanks the client, credits the stylist and gives a reason to rebook.
