How to add Google reviews to Squarespace (without paying for another app)

Add Google reviews to Squarespace with a Code Block: paste HTML (readable by Google and AI, any plan) or a JavaScript widget (Core, Plus or Advanced plans).

The top result for "how to add Google reviews to Squarespace" is a Squarespace forum thread asking how to do it "without paying for yet another service." Fair question. Squarespace has no Google reviews block, but it has something better than an app for this job: the Code Block, which puts raw HTML straight into your page.

What does Squarespace give you for Google reviews?

The Code Block. Here's what the Squarespace Help Center says (checked October 19, 2026):

  • HTML mode: to run code, select HTML in the block's Mode menu. In CSS or JavaScript mode, the code shows up as plain text.
  • JavaScript and iframes are plan-gated: adding either to a Code Block requires the Core, Plus or Advanced plan.
  • 400 KB per block (about 300,000 characters): room for dozens of reviews.
  • Sometimes hidden: code may not display while you're logged in, and may not render on index pages or when Ajax loading is on (7.0 sites).

Code Injection (site header or footer) also exists, but it loads scripts across pages. It can't place a review block at a specific spot.

Which method should you use on Squarespace?

Pasted HTML, in most cases. Squarespace is one of the few hosted builders where it truly lands in your page, with no practical size cap.

The Revys HTML includes the reviews, their styling (CSS scoped to the widget, so it won't touch the rest of your site) and schema.org LocalBusiness or Organization markup. There's no display JavaScript, so it works even where scripts are blocked.

How do you add Google reviews to Squarespace?

  1. Connect your Google Business Profile

Sign up for Revys and connect your profile through Google's official sign-in. Revys pulls your reviews and refreshes them nightly.

  2. Set up the widget and generate the HTML

Open "My businesses › your business › On my website": your widget is already there (a carousel), and "Change style" also offers grid, list, wall or badge. Click "Put on my website" and enter your site address: Revys recognizes Squarespace (if it doesn't, pick "Squarespace" under "Not right?") and shows the HTML to paste. Click "Generate the HTML" and copy the code.

  3. Add a Code Block

In the Squarespace editor, open the page, click Edit, click an insert point (or Add Block) and choose Code.

  4. Paste in HTML mode

Make sure the Mode menu says HTML, paste the code, close the block and save the page.

  5. Check while logged out

Open the page in a private window: that's what visitors see. Then view the page source (Ctrl+U, Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) and search for a sentence from one review.

  6. Schedule a refresh

The HTML doesn't change on its own. Once a month, regenerate it in Revys and replace the block's content. Two minutes, and your latest reviews are live.

Prefer automatic updates and your plan allows it? Choose the JavaScript option instead and paste this line into the Code Block, still in HTML mode:

<script src="https://revys.io/api/embed/YOUR_ID" async></script>

Reviews will refresh nightly, but inside an iframe: visitors see them, AI crawlers don't.

Why isn't the widget showing up?

The causes are almost always the same, and Squarespace's help page lists most of them:

  • You're logged in: Squarespace can hide custom code in the editor. Check in a private window.
  • The block is in JavaScript or CSS mode instead of HTML, so the code appears as text.
  • You're on an entry-level plan: scripts and iframes are blocked. Switch to the static HTML, which is allowed.
  • It's a 7.0 site with Ajax loading: turn it off in Site Styles if the script only runs after a refresh.
  • The block is on an index or collection page: test it on a regular page.
  • A broken script locks the editor: Squarespace suggests previewing in Safe Mode to remove it.

On entry-level plans, we couldn't confirm whether Squarespace keeps the <script type="application/ld+json"> tag (the schema.org markup) in pasted HTML. If it strips it, your reviews still display and stay readable; only that markup goes.

You can, and it's worth doing either way. A plain Button Block that points to your Google review page works on every plan and needs no code. But a link sends visitors away from your site to read the proof, and many won't come back. Showing a few reviews on the page and linking to the rest gives you both.

The Revys widget can include two optional buttons for that: one opens Google's review form for your business, the other opens your profile on Google Maps. Both open in a new tab, so your page stays open behind them.

It does its part: crawlers that read your page find the review text, names and dates. Vercel found that none of the major AI crawlers executed JavaScript in December 2024, which is why HTML matters more than a widget here. Google does run JavaScript, but its own docs still recommend server-side rendering because not every bot can.

It's only one part, though. Whether ChatGPT or AI Overviews mention you also depends on your Google Business Profile, sites that talk about you, and your own copy. More in local business visibility in AI search.

FAQ

Can I add Google reviews to Squarespace for free?

Yes. Revys is free for one Google Business Profile, with all five layouts and the HTML to paste into a Code Block. The free plan adds a small "Free widget by Revys" credit under the reviews.

Does Squarespace have a built-in Google reviews block?

No. Squarespace doesn't pull in your Google reviews on its own. A Code Block does the job: paste a review tool's HTML or script into it. There's no extension to install.

Which Squarespace plan do I need for a Google reviews widget?

For a JavaScript widget or an iframe, Squarespace requires the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. Static review HTML can go in a Code Block without that restriction.

Why isn't my reviews widget showing on Squarespace?

Usually one of three things: you're logged in (Squarespace can hide custom code in the editor, so check in a private window), the block isn't set to HTML mode, or your 7.0 site uses Ajax loading, which can stop scripts from running.

Are reviews on a Squarespace site readable by ChatGPT?

Pasted HTML is: the review text is in the page Squarespace serves. A JavaScript widget isn't, because AI crawlers read HTML without running JavaScript.

Will Google reviews on Squarespace give me stars in search results?

No. Google doesn't show stars for reviews a business displays about itself on its own site (self-serving reviews). A local business gets its stars from its Google Business Profile.
